Northwest Bergen County History Day

The Ramsey Historical Association will be participating in the second annual Northwest Bergen County History Day on Saturday May 19th 2012. Ramsey’s oldest home, the Old Stone House Museum will be open along with 7 other nearby historical home/museums including the Schoolhouse Museum, John Fell House, The Hermitage, Hopper-Goetschius House, Mahwah Museum, Zabriskie House, and Van Allen House.

Hours will be 10:00 – 4:00 pm and this year in honor of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, each site will feature special exhibits about the Civil War era.

Tickets are $10 and include admission to all 8 sites. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets will be available in advance at the Schoolhouse Museum in Ridgewood or at Abma’s Farm Market in Wyckoff or on site at the locations. The Ramsey Farmers Market Proudly Announces Its Third Season!

This winter season our Ramsey Farmers’ Market took a leap of faith when it ventured on to become Bergen County’s first community based indoor farmers’ market. Choosing the Eric Smith School cafeteria for a location and held every Sunday from December through March, over 20 vendors brought their seasonal produce and great artisan products for our community to continue to enjoy. Word spread rapidly and farmers’ market followers appeared from so many surrounding towns, a few new farmers and vendors joined the market and our winter market became a wonderful success, thanks also to the efforts of a talented and dedicated farmers’ market committee and support from Mayor Chris Botta, Borough Council members and our Council Liaison, Vanessa Jachzel.

Sponsored by the Ramsey Historical Association, the Ramsey Farmers’ Market will begin its 3rd season outdoors at the Main Street train station on June 10th, kicking off with our traditional Strawberry Festival hosted by the Woman’s Club of Ramsey. The market will continue outdoors every Sunday 9AM – 2PM through November 18th.

Planning is already well on the way for another season offering the freshest produce and products from local farms and vendors. The market has planned plenty of family fun, music, chef demos, artisan exhibits, children’s crafts, and special events and hopes to serve as a resource for helping to make our town one committed to environmental sustainability and healthy living.

The outdoor market will continue its Pay it Forward program where visitors can bring non-perishable food items for donation to the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. Visit the market website www.ramseyfarmersmarket.org for a schedule of events and list of vendors.

Ramsey Farmer’s Winter Market

“The Ramsey Farmer’s Market is extending its season by moving indoors for the winter.

Beginning Dec. 4, about two dozen vendors will sell fruits, vegetables and specialty products in the Eric S. Smith Middle School cafeteria.

“We’ll be the only community-based farmer’s market that’s indoors,” said Nancy Boone, the market’s founder and manager.

The outside market, which sets up every Sunday at the Main Street train station, will end Nov. 20.

The Ramsey Farmer’s Market is in its second season and typically has about 30 vendors, Boone said.

Space constraints and the limited availability of vendors during the winter will make the indoor market slightly smaller.

In addition to food, the market has special events such as children’s activities and periodically a corner where artists and crafters bring their wares.

The market also hosts a weekly food drive. Customers are asked to bring non-perishable foods and many farmers donate fresh produce at the end of the day that is delivered to the Center for Food Action. That collection will continue during the winter.

The indoor market will run Sundays through March 25 (with the exception of Dec. 25, Jan. 1 and Feb. 19) and be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cub Scout Den 6 from Ramsey had the opportunity to take in the town’s history today with Ramsey local historian Tom Dater.

The pack toured the photo display provided by the RHA inside the historic Ramsey train station (New Jersey’s oldest in service railway station) getting explanations of the subjects of each photograph from Tom.

The Ramsey Historical Association will be holding its Fall Open House at the Old Stone House Museum and May Barn at 538 Island Road from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. Volunteers will break out an antique apple grinder and cider press to demonstrate how apple cider was made. Visitors will get to enjoy free apple cider and cider-dipped donuts.
